Co-operative granted licence to run Sheerness market

Most traditional market operators, whether they are local councils or private operators, are profit driven and this is reflected in increases to market rents each year.

Traders at Sheerness have come up with an alternative scheme by setting up a non-profit-making co-operative to run their market.  The co-operative was originally set up last summer as a temporary measure when the previous operator pulled out, leaving traders high and dry.

Customers' Legal Rights

Your customers have a number of legal rights that you should be aware of as a trader.

If you sell a product that is faulty or not fit for the purpose for which it was sold, the customer is entitled to a full refund, a partial refund, full repair of the product or a replacement product.  Whichever method is used it is the customers' choice.

Huntingdingshire revitalises town centres initiativeHuntingdonshire District Council and Business Link joined forces two years ago to launch a new initiative "Make it Your Market" to help new businesses start-ups in the town centre markets of Huntingdon, St Ives and Ramsey.  Already the scheme has helped 15 people open their own market stalls and one of these has been so successful that they are looking to move on to a retail outlet.

Newgate Market generates £450k for city

City of York Council have estimated that York's city centre market generates a massive £450,000 per year for the city.

They have recently conducted an analysis of Newgate Market's performance to identify potential improvements and ensure it continues to thrive.

The Council is considering an investment of £68,000 to improve the market's appearance and attract customers and an additional annual investment of £24,000.  Although this would mean making savings across other services they believe that doing nothing could mean the market could become visually detrimental to York city centre and lead to a loss of income for the city.
